Headline – Earthquake Rattles Costa Rica, CoCo Beach Tourist Clueless Until Sister Sends Angry Email

On January 8th, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake shook Costa Rica. Its epicenter was located 20 miles north, northwest of San Jose, the country’s capital.

Today (Sunday the 11th) officials say that 32 people have died, but the number of deceased may increase since 64 people are still missing. Most of the wreckage is a result of landslides. Already rough roads are now blocked by rocks, boulders, and other impassable pieces of earth making it difficult for rescuers to reach those who are injured or trapped.

According to CNN.com, the entire country and parts of Nicaragua felt the earthquake. The reports also say that San Jose has experienced close to 2,000 aftershocks.

The story for us in CoCo is much different. In fact, all day Thursday we played in the waterfalls and at the beach. None of us (Jason and I, our friends Ben and Cathie, my parents, and my aunt and uncle, Ralph and Betty) had any clue of the happenings just 180 miles away (give or take). We haven’t felt a single aftershock either.

It wasn’t until I checked my email and Facebook account to see that my friends back home were worried. I even had an email from my sister who was a little mad that we hadn’t checked in.

Sorry Jen, we had no idea!!! I guess that’s what happens when you don’t have a TV and take the day off from work.
